Volunteer for SKC – gain experience for you & your dog

SKC Dog Sports Committee is calling all dog sports enthusiasts to participate in demonstrations that promote dog sports – after all, we know our sports dogs are happy dogs and want to spread the joy to others too!

Being a volunteer for SKC dog sports demonstrations is, like the name suggests, volunteer work which you will not be paid for. Instead you and your dog will gain important experience of various environments and extra practice in your dog sport. For example, if you and your dog have only just started trialling, it is good exposure for you to do demos, as the new environment and excitement levels simulate the trial situation. On the other hand, if it is the possibility of meeting Guests of Honours and getting your picture taken, volunteering at demos will suit you perfectly :)

In exchange for your efforts, you will be able to sign-up for a fun competition, open trial, practice run or such, free of charge (subject to the Dog Sport Committee’s decision). Please note that in order to participate in a demonstration, you’ll need to register (one time only):

>> Register as a volunteer for SKC dog sports demonstrations

Registration as a volunteer does not guarantee a chance to participate in every demo. All arrangements for participation in a demo will be agreed upon after SKC e-mails you about the opportunity and the details of the demo.

Dog Sports demonstrations

Doggy dancing, or Canine Musical Freestyle, is a relatively new sport that combines dog obedience and dance in a fun way, presenting a visually exciting display of handler and canine teamwork. The handler and dog perform dance-oriented footwork according to their choice of music, often also dressed up to the theme. The choreography often includes twirls, jumps and balancing – all tricks that are taught to the dog separately before putting them into a sequence and fitting in with the music. Have a look at these videos:

Disc Dog, or frisbee dog, is a fast, exciting sport where the dog displays impressive jumps and speed while catching frisbee discs. The sport comes in two varieties; distance catching and somewhat choreographed freestyle catching. It is not about fetching – the goal is for the dog to catch the frisbee and drop it, ready to catch the next one. The sport celebrates the bond between handler and dog, by allowing them to work together in a very fun way :) !

Dec 4th: Join the fun agility event and the frisbee competition

On the 4th of December SKC will participate in the Paws n Friends event at Toa Payoh Town Park. There will be plenty of agility, of course (it seems to be the dog sport in demand at the moment!), but also a frisbee (or disc dog) demonstration and competition. If your dog enjoys catching frisbees, join the competition! It is ‘the most catches competition’, with five frisbees for your dog to catch. The dog with most solid catching skills wins!

There are plenty of prizes to go by, as best three in all categories win. In fun agility the categories are mini dogs  and maxi dogs. Besides competing, everyone with a dog above one year old is welcome to come and try out the equipment.
